The second session we attended was in 3D workshop. The brief for that one was pretty short as well:
"Make the word adapt out of wood, typographically, beautifully, photograph it somewhere afterwards. There are no other restrictions."
Before heading up to the workshop, we discussed the ideas a little bit, all agreed that it would be better to use simple font (Futura in our case), then choose the concept and play around it, photographing the letters. I think that is really clever, because the use of complicated (or even decorative) font would limited us a lot. Simple thick Futura will fit different enviroments easily, giving us an opportunity to experiment and explore.
In the workshop we had a quick introduction, technicion showed us how machines work and what they are used for. First thing we got to do is to glue letters to different pieces of wood in order to have an idea of where to cut.
After that each of us picked a letter (I got d or p - not quite sure as they are the same) and started to cut it out. I must say it was the most stresfull moment, since the start of the course for me! Not only because I'm really scared of machines and the fact that they cut whole your hand off, but also because I am very clumsy. I was too afraid to mess everything up and cut too much. I'm not going to go through all processes, thoughts and horrbile pictures that appeared in my had, but it was a real challenge. I kind of screwed some sides, as can be seen on the photos (yeah, looks like I was drunk doing it, the thing is I wasn't, honestly), but technicians helped me to finish it more or less even and sharp (thanks guys).
All of us were really pleased with the result. Graphic designers are used to type on the screen, and seeing 3D letters brings the whole idea of the typography on to the next level.

We were so inspired, that we couldn't wait to start experimenting with it, outside the workshop, we started to 'adapt' our word to the enviroment.

I took these photos as a samples, because I tried to figure out how would the letters apear on the shot. I also kind of liked the idea how wooden word fits with those benches. Having returned to the studio we painted the letters to white, so they all appear clean and identical. We decided that after they have dried each of us will took them to different locations. It would be nicer to explore the word from different angles, rather than having just one idea and one shot as an outcome.
I think I'll spend a couple of days picking up a place where to photograph them, as it should be chosen wisely, the enviroment of the picture will affect on the context of the photo a lot. The key thing to keep in mind: constantly keep checking if the word says excactly what you want it to say, as the meaning changes depending on the background.
P.S. Just couldn't resist the temptetion to play with effects.
