Logotype project: feedback

Finally, a week after the end of the project I managed to gather all the feedback together. The good point is that now I can look at it with a fresh sight. A little background: as an outcome I made a logotype, where each letter was taken from different sheet of paper (the inks one, that I showed in the last post). The idea behind it was to have not only the variety of geometric shapes (although v,a and r,y looked pretty much the same), but also the variety of textures. This is the result that I pinned up on the day of the crit, followed by my mission statement (which I think is quite poorly written as I decided to remake it at the last minute).

How did I evaluate my work on that day:

  • did a broad research, that gave me a good starting point

  • had no difficulties in coming up with the ideas (well that's not true at all - who I was trying to impress?!)

  • the development part was the hardest for me - spent a lot of time on it, but finally was able to move design further (mark making)

  • pleased with the result, but I wish I worked harder and more in order to improve the outcome

How did others evaluate my work:

  • the style of the design and the angular forms

  • variety of shapes and textures communicates the idea

  • translates well on a smaller scale

  • however, the letter e is difficult to recognise - looks like k

  • not sure that the variety word can be decoded without seeing the ethos

  • if the point is variety - v,a,r and y are all very simillar (already mentioned that)

My tutor marked my work with C, which stands for: concepts were either satisfactory or good, but drawing and refining didn't enable to convince, or drawing was ok, but concepts were weak.

I agree with all the critic mentiond above. I still think the concept is good, but I didn't push it forward enough and as a result there was a lack of communication in my work. The logotype isn't readable for people who don't know the idea behind it and that's what let me down. My outcome isn't a failure, it is an attempt, that can be improved, especially as soon as I know which parts didn't work.

This project taught me an important lesson: there are some moments, when you need to stop and look at the design from others point of view, like you've never seen it before (and yes, it is a hard thing to do). If it still makes sense and communicates, then you are moving in the right direction. If no, then just go back to the starting point.
